February 22, 1964 - Beatles gone but not forgotten

Today is bittersweet because the Beatles have gone home to England. They made the past two weeks the most exciting of my life. I will never forget all the wonderful things that happened during their visit to America.

I called Debbie this morning to tell her how empty I felt, and then she reminded me that the Beatles will be on The Ed Sullivan Show tomorrow night! I was so sad about their leaving that I had totally forgot about the Sullivan Show!

For those of you who haven’t been reading my blog entries each day, although the Beatles are back in England, they will be on Ed Sullivan tomorrow because they taped three songs on the afternoon of February 9 for future broadcast. I know because I was lucky enough to be in the audience!

I remember they did Twist And Shout, Please Please Me and I Want To Hold Your Hand. I probably screamed non-stop through each of the songs. I sure hope I get to see myself on TV!!!!! As the song from Bye Bye Birdie goes, "Ed Sullivan. Ed Sullivan. We’re gonna be on Ed Sullivan!"

February 21, 1964 - Beatles Leave for Britain!

Earlier this evening the Beatles headed back to England. SOB, SOB, SOB. I already miss them! Although it was a cold Friday night, thousands of fans went to Kennedy Airport to see them off. Debbie and I went with her mom. We got there fairly early and were able to work out way up to the first row of fans behind the police barricades. There was a lot of pushing and shoving going on, but everyone was well behaved.

Although I was getting cold and tired of standing, the payoff came when the Beatles walked near the barricades and headed up the stairs to their plane. It was a big Pan Am jet. Debbie’s mom looked through her binoculars and noticed that the words "JET CLIPPER BEATLES" were painted on the plane by the top of the door. That’s so cool. I could see through the binoculars that each Beatle was carrying a hand bag and a stack of albums. I wonder what they listen to. When the Beatles got to the top of the stairs, they waved at the crowd. It was another moment I’ll never forget!

February 20, 1964 - Beatles to head home tomorrow!

Well all good things must come to an end some time. The Beatles are going back to England tomorrow. For those in the New York area, you should listen to the radio and get the exact details of when and where to go to see them off. Debbie and I will be there and I’ll file my report when we get back from the airport.

February 19, 1964 - Beatles Meet Boxer!

Sally from Miami sent me an email that the Beatles met yesterday with boxer Cassius Clay, who is training for a fight with Sonny Liston, the current heavyweight champion. The paper said that Clay and the Beatles joked around and had the members of the press laughing. The boxer picked Ringo up like he was light as a feather. He also made up a poem. "When Liston reads about the Beatles visiting me, he’ll be so mad I’ll knock him out in three." My dad says there is no way Clay will be able to beat Liston. My dad says Liston is one of the toughest men to ever step inside a boxing ring.
