February 2, 1964 - One week to go till the Sullivan Show!

I’m so excited! Next Sunday I get to see the Beatles in person and on TV! Let me explain. I have tickets to see the Beatles on Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Show dress rehearsal. Then I can go home and watch them on TV that night!

I watched the Sullivan Show tonight to see if he was going to talk about the Beatles. He asked if anyone had any extra tickets for the show with the Beatles. They must have forgot to save enough tickets for their friends! Sullivan said he needed two tickets for Randy Paar. I think that must be Jack Paar’s daughter who likes the Beatles. I hope she gets tickets, but she can’t have mine!

February 1, 1964 - Beatles month is here!

It’s finally February! I thought February would never get here. This is the month the Beatles are Coming!

Last night I watched The Jack Paar Program. Paar reminded us that he had the Beatles on his show a while back and that they would be on Ed Sullivan. As if I didn’t know! He then pulled two Beatle wigs out of a bag, and he and comedian Jonathan Winters put them on and pretended to be the Beatles. He also said his daughter liked the Beatles. Like that was a surprise. What girl doesn’t like the Beatles?

Debbie and I went shopping today. We each bought Beatles sweatshirts. They’re so cool. They have the same picture of the Beatles that is on the I Want To Hold Your Hand picture sleeve. We got ours on sale for only $1.57. We later saw them at another store for $3.98. That really excited us. Debbie may be rich, but she really loves a bargain! We also added to our Beatles button collections with two new additions to go with our "Be a Beatle Booster" button. One has the same picture as the sweatshirt. The other says "I Love Beatles." And boy do I LOVE THE BEATLES!!!! Debbie also bought a red and white Beatles hat. It’s really sharp and looks so good on her. I couldn’t afford the hat, but may buy one later. We also saw Beatle wigs for sale, but we didn’t buy them because we really looked silly when we put them on! They are so phoney looking! Tonight we’re gonna listen to Murray the K’s Swingin’ Soiree show on WINS. He says the Beatles are "What’s Happening" and he’s playing tons of their songs. He not only plays the three 45s, but also songs from the albums!

January 31, 1964 - Strange new Beatles 45

With the Beatles arrival in New York just one week away, excitement is really building. It’s all we talk about at school. In fact, everyone is talking about the Beatles!

After I got home from school I got a call from Bill at the record store. He said there was another new Beatles 45 out! I got mom to race me there. Unfortunately the new record is not so great. It has My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean on one side and When The Saints Go Marching In on the other. I don’t know why the Beatles would record those songs. It doesn’t sound like they even sing on the songs. The record sleeve and label says the songs are by "The Beatles with Tony Sheridan." My guess is that Tony Sheridan sings both songs. The 45 is on MGM Records. Bill said he would call a promo man and try to get the story behind this unusual record. The good news is both songs, particularly My Bonnie, really rock. I’ll post a review when I learn more about the 45.

January 30, 1964 - What's happening in Beatleland

Bill called me from the record store to read me a Capitol Records News report titled “What’s Happening in Beatleland.” Here are the highlights.

I Want To Hold Your Hand has sold over one million copies. Meet The Beatles has sold over 400,000. No single or album has ever sold that much so quickly. Not even records by Elvis Presley!

The Beatles will arrive at John F. Kennedy Airport on February 7! (New York’s Idlewild Airport recently changed its name in honor of our slain President.) They will be on Ed Sullivan on February 9. They will play a concert at the Washington Coliseum on February 11. They will play two concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York on February 12. One at 7:30 and another at 10:00. Both concerts sold out by 3:00 p.m. Capitol Records is going to record the Carnegie Hall concert for an album to be titled “The Beatles at Carnegie Hall.” The LP will probably be issued in April. I can’t wait for that album to come out. Imagine, a live Beatles album! That will be so cool.

Capitol says that almost every magazine in the country is running articles on the Beatles. I’ve got some of them such as Time, Life, Newsweek, New Yorker, McCall’s and Vouge. I need to track down the article in Mademoiselle. Hopefully one of my mom’s friends gets that magazine. Hollywood and TV stars like Janet Leigh, Steve McQueen and Milton Berle now have Beatle haircuts! My dad says he can’t imagine Uncle Miltie with a Beatle haircut, but then, my dad says, Uncle Miltie often wore a dress on his TV show.

There are now Beatles fan clubs starting all over America. I’d like to join one of those. There will also be all sorts of neat Beatles stuff we can buy real soon. Beatle buttons, sweatshirts and, get this, ice cream!!!!!

The most exciting news is that United Artists says they will begin filming a Beatles movie this March!!!! Think how neat it will be to see the Beatles in a movie theater in a film all their own!
