January 29, 1964 - Beatles Number One all over America!!!
I have received emails from all over the country telling me that I Want To Hold Your Hand is number one in their hometown. In several cities, She Loves You is number two and Please Please Me is moving up the charts. This is so cool. Jane from Miami Beach is excited because the February 16 Ed Sullivan Show with the Beatles will be broadcast live from the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach! She thinks the Beatles will enjoy their time in the Sunshine State. She reports that WFUN and WQAM are both playing I Want To Hold Your Hand, She Loves You and Please Please Me and that I Want To Hold Your Hand is topping both charts!
Suzie from Annapolis reports that the Beatles are playing a concert at the Washington Coliseum on February 11. That’s the night before the Beatles play in Carnegie Hall. Suzie already has her ticket, which cost $4.00. She talked her mom into getting the ticket as a birthday present. Her birthday is February 9. Suzie says tickets cost $2.00, $3.00 and $4.00. That’s much more reasonable than those expensive $5.50 tickets at Carnegie Hall.

January 28, 1964 - Beatles Number One in America!!!
I called Bill at the record store today to see if he had any more Beatles news. Bill just got the new issue of Billboard and I Want To Hold Your Hand is number one. Now it is number one in Billboard and Cash Box and on WABC, WMCA and WINS!!! I bet it’s number one in almost every city in America. Bill said Meet The Beatles is number 92 in its first week in Billboard. He thinks it will be number one in a few weeks.
January 27, 1964 - I got my Carnegie Hall ticket!
After I got home from school I got a call from Debbie confirming that her mom got 4 tickets for the Beatles at Carnegie Hall. We’re going to the early show because Debbie and I have school the next day. I’m glad because I want to see them in concert as soon as possible! Debbie said her mom went to the box office at 6:00 a.m. to get good tickets. Believe it or not, she wasn’t the first one there. She thinks some people must have spent the night there! By the time the box office opened, there was a long line around the block! I’m glad she thought to go early because she got us tickets on the second row!!! Out of curiosity, I called the box office when I got home from school and they said that both shows had already sold out!!!!
January 26, 1964 - Beatles to play concert in New York!!!
I had planned on sleeping late today, but mom woke me up with some really great news. There was an ad in The New York Times for a Beatles concert in New York! Actually, the Beatles will play two concerts on February 12 at Carnegie Hall!!! My dad says that it is the most famous concert hall in America, maybe even the world. He can’t believe they’re letting the Beatles play there. He says it normally has orchestras, string quartets and other classical music. I told him it just shows that the Beatles are respectable. My dad says it shows people, even Carnegie Hall, will do anything for money. I can’t afford to buy a ticket (they range in price from $3.00 to $5.50). My dad says that $5.50 is outrageous. He saw one of the world’s greatest violin player backed by a full symphony orchestra for $5.00. Imagine, $5.50 for a concert! I know it’s a lot, but I bet the Beatles are worth it.
I called Debbie and told her the good news about the concert, but I started crying when I realized I couldn’t afford to go. Debbie said she’d call me back after breakfast. She called back and told me that her mother wanted me to go with them to the concert! I can’t believe how lucky I am. Debbie said her mother would go to the Carnegie Hall box office tomorrow morning and get tickets. Debbie said her mom is gonna get the best tickets she can, even though they cost $5.50! She says her mom and dad want to go to the concert to see what all the excitement is about. Her parents are so cool.
Ed Sullivan mentioned the Beatles would be on his show. He asked if anyone had any extra tickets because they needed more! I’m sure glad I have my ticket! He said the Beatles would be on the show February 9 and 16 from some hotel. My ticket is for Feb 9. I’m glad because I couldn’t wait till the 16th!
