Info about the Beatles

The Beatles are a music group from Liverpool, England that formed in 1960. They consist of George Harrison on lead guitar, John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass and Ringo Starr on drums. The Beatles broke into earshot in October, 1962. Even before their first visit to EMI Studios in London, they were voted the best group in Merseyside, which is another name for Liverpool, which is on the Mersey River. Their first record, Love Me Do, sold enough records in 2 days to soar into the national charts in England making the top 20. The Beatles are visually and musically exciting and accomplished.

In England, teenagers know the names of each of the members of the group. That shows how popular they are. The only Beach Boy name I can think of is Brian Wilson and I don’t the name of even one of the guys in the Kingston Trio.

In February of 1963 the Beatles second record, Please Please Me, hit Number One on the British hit parade, making them triumphant chart-toppers!

Their records are produced by George Martin. Many of the songs are written by two members of the group, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. They have written enough songs to release all-original singles till 1975! That’s a lot of songs. If they do 4 new 45s each year (that’s a total of 8 original songs a year) from 1964 through 1975, that’s 88 songs that they have written by themselves!

The Beatles have a do-it-yourself approach to their records. They write their own lyrics, design the music and work out their own vocal arrangements. Their music is wild, pungent, hard-hitting, uninhibited and personal. The do-it-yourself angle ensures originality. Although many people think they have an American style, their influence has been the Rhythm and Blues folk music which abounds on Mersyside. They admire the Shirelles, a group from New Jersey, and included two Shirelles songs on their first album. (See my review of their great album Please Please Me.)

The above information is from Tony Barrow’s notes on the back cover to the group’s first album. I’ll add more about the group and each Beatle as I learn more about them.
