Meet the Beatles is the latest and greatest!

The new Capitol Beatles album, "Meet The Beatles!," is fabulous. It opens with both sides of the group’s smash hit single, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "I Saw Her Standing There." These two rockers are a great start to a great album! They are followed by a beautiful ballad, "This Boy," which has harmony vocals by John, Paul and George. John sings the passionate lead vocal. John also sings lead on the next two songs, "It Won’t Be Long" (a fast-paced song that would make a great single) and "All I’ve Got To Do" (a pretty love song). Side One closes with "All My Loving," which has Paul singing lead. It’s another fast song and it has a really neat guitar solo by George. This song would also be a hit single. All of the songs on the first side were written by group members John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The second side opens up with a tune written by George called "Don’t Bother Me." The back cover says George’s vocal is double-tracked. (That means that George sang the song twice. I’m told it gives a voice a fuller sound.) I guess he sings the song because he wrote the song. The next song is called "Little Child." It really rocks! It’s really neat to hear John singing "I’m so sad and lonely, baby take a chance with me." I’m sure all female listeners would be willing to take a chance with John! The pace then slows again for Paul’s solo vocal on "Till There Was You." This is the only song on the album not written by the group. I remember the song from the Broadway play "The Music Man." Paul’s voice is so pretty and George plays a jazz-sounding guitar solo. This is a song even adults will like, but is sharp enough for Beatles fans to enjoy. You wouldn’t expect two slow songs in a row, so "Hold Me Tight" rocks with a pounding beat. Paul sings the lead vocal. The next song is Ringo’s turn to sing. It, like all but two songs on the album, was written by John and Paul. It’s called "I Wanna Be Your Man." The disc closes with "Not A Second Time," which has John’s vocal double-tracked.

The notes on the back cover say that in addition to John on rhythm guitar and harmonica, George on lead guitar, Paul on electric bass guitar and Ringo on drums, members of the group also plays piano, Hammond organ, tambourine, mouth organ, Arabian bongos and claves. They’re so talented!

The front cover has a striking picture of the group taken by Robert Freeman. It has close-ups of the faces of each Beatle. The left side of each face is cloaked in shadow. Their hair is much longer than it was on the other album covers. It's so sharp! The back cover has neat stories about Beatlemania in England. It also has a picture of the group wearing sharp-looking collarless jackets and medium healed boots. One weird thing. The cover says the record is "The First Album by England's Phenomenal Pop Combo." However, the record is really the Beatles second album. I wonder why Capitol said it was the first.

Like the Vee-Jay album, "Introducing The Beatles," the Capitol album can also be purchased in stereo for about a dollar more. The stereo version is neat as it has the vocals coming out of one speaker on some of the songs.

As great as the British "Please Please Me" and American "Introducing The Beatles" albums are, "Meet The Beatles!" is even better! If you haven’t bought the "I Want To Hold Your Hand" single, then it’s definitely worth paying between one and two dollars more to get the album. You get 12 great songs rather than 2! Even if you already bought the 45, you should still buy this album!
